Introduction
In 1990, while serving as the pastor of First Lutheran Church, Potter, Neb., and Grace Lutheran Church, Gurley, Neb., I prepared a series of six daily devotions, calling the collection “All Good Gifts: Devotions for the Harvest.” This is the fourth in the collection.
Reading: Matthew 6:25-34
“‘Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?’” (v. 26).
Devotion
Jesus tells us his heavenly Father—and ours—values each one of us more than the birds. And because we mean so much to him, he will care for us and provide for us.
Our work at home, in the office, and in the field does not insure our future or our prosperity. God gives us a future through his Son, Jesus Christ. He promises us a bountiful harvest of faithful living, of striving for his kingdom and his righteousness, not as a reward for work done well and hard, but as a free gift.
Our work is to live like birds, trusting in God’s care.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, remind us as we work that you provide us with all we need: life and strength and daily food. Help us to seek your kingdom and your righteousness. Amen.
Ut in Omnibus Glorificetur Deus
