In the Eye
Theme
The title of this exhibit, “In the Eye,” brings to mind two sayings: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “the calm in the eye of the storm.”
Each photograph depicts, in its own way, the coming together of these two sayings. The images lead us to contemplate how we, the beholders, can look at our world, with its storms large and small, and find beauty in moments of calm.
These images come from three places: Nebraska, Colorado and Oregon. Two of these states traditionally hold a reputation of offering stunning scenery and inspiring vistas. They do not disappoint, no matter where one looks. One is more of a secret, hiding itself in plain view, at least to travelers who drive through or fly over its broad terrain. But it, too, rewards anyone attentive to its scenery, its wide skies and its small wonders.
As an individual who moved to Nebraska from the East, I have come to appreciate the beauty of this state, especially in its often hidden and overlooked details. Cultivating this sense attuned to beholding Nebraska’s subtle beauty has helped me turn this eye to other states.
This is what drives my photography. This is what helps me to see what I could so readily, so easily overlook. This is what brings me a sense of calm amid the storms of life.
